January 11, 2012 Meeting

Guest Speaker Timothy J Thomas Sr.

Cave diving venture to Eagles Nest and to Jackson Blue Springs

Tim Thomas is an avid scuba diver, Owner of Best Dive Training, LLC. and the current manager of the BRATS (Best Recreational And Technical Scuba) club. Both located in Connecticut.

Tim Cave Diving

When not teaching or diving in local lakes, Tim can be found crewing on the R/V Garloo, a famous dive boat and Research Vessel out of Captree Marina in Babylon NY. And when not crewing on the Garloo you´ll see Tim with his car full of gear heading south to dive the spring fed cave systems in Northern Florida. Tim is also an active volunteer diver at the Norwalk Maritime Aquarium. On any Thursday you will find time swinging with the sharks in the Open Ocean exhibit and speaking to the audience from under water with a full face mask on. Another area in the northeast that Tim loves to dive is the 1000 Islands region of the St. Lawrence River. The variety of wrecks, both old and new shallow and deep, offer divers of all levels an enjoyable diving experience.

Tim is a trained technical diver and an equally trained cave diver, often mixing his skills to dive deep cave systems. Being a tri–mix diver opens up cave system not normally available to cave divers. In the cave systems he is comfortable with his side–mount rig, and when diving deep you´ll see him with a set of big doubles on his back and stage bottles strapped to his side. Cave Diving and Deep Ocean Wreck diving require extensive training and it is very important that divers are well trained before attempting a deep dive or a cave dive.

Tim Wreck diving

Tim will be speaking on his recent cave diving venture to Eagles Nest and to Jackson Blue Springs in Northern Florida while attending the NSS-CDS workshop in Mariana FL. There will be a video and slide presentation included. Tim likes audience participation so feel free to ask questions or to speak about your personal experiences.

Tim is a member of the National Speleological Society and a member of the Cave Diving Section as well as a member of the NACD, National Association for Cave Divers. Tim is Full Cave certified thru NSS–CDS and Tri–mix certified thru TDI.
